The Grapes of Wrath was written by John Steinbeck while he lived in Monte Sereno

The small city of Monte Sereno, California is nestled in the northern slope of the hills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and is just ten miles away from San Jose and 50 miles away from San Francisco. It is shoe-horned between the desirable communities of Saratoga and Los Gatos, sharing public services and utility providers with Los Gatos.  Little traveled El Sereno open space preserve quietly overlooks and marshals the city limits.  Minutes from a convenient Silicon Valley commute, many top innovative minds, entrepreneurs, business professionals and executives call Monte Sereno their home. The entire city spans less than two square miles and consists of a quiet residential community of around 4,000 people with no commercial activity within city limits. However, due to sharing a zip code with the city of Los Gatos and being so close to other large cities, residents of Monte Sereno still have all the resources they need to live a comfortable, peaceful and safe life. These are all reasons why investors are focusing their attention on Monte Sereno for potential investment properties, and it’s expected this attention will continue to rise before it falls.

Monte Sereno’s Celebrity History

John Steinbeck was one of Monte Sereno’s more famous residents

Monte Sereno became a city early in the 1900’s and was predominantly a rural agricultural area. Everywhere you looked there were orchards, livestock, dairies, ranch houses and more. The sheer beauty of the city attracted writers and artists to live there, since it provided plenty of inspiration for them and their careers. In fact, the great author John Steinbeck wrote his novel The Grapes of Wrath while living in Monte Sereno.

Since Monte Sereno was not formed based on a historical village or on a crossroads, there has never been any commercial activity within the city. When Monte Sereno was incorporated in the 1950’s, the residents made a clear statement that they wanted the city to be strictly residential so they could maintain their quality of life. Still to this day the city is only residential, making it a unique place to live in.

Interesting Aspects of Monte Sereno

One of the most unique aspects of Monte Sereno as a whole is the infrastructure. While it is its own city, it shares public services with the nearby city of Los Gatos. This involves everything from law enforcement to parks and recreation to schools and even youth sports leagues. Things like building permits, public works and other administrative services are provided directly by the City of Monte Sereno, though. The unique blend of providing their own services and working in conjunction with other agencies ensures residents can live a high-quality life that’s efficient economically for everyone involved. Monte Sereno also has some of the best schools you can find in the area, so there are plenty of benefits and reasons why people call it their home.

Why Investment Properties in Monte Sereno Make Sense

El Sereno Open Space Preserve sits atop Monte Sereno and Los Gatos

Location is one of the biggest considerations investors make when searching for investment properties. This is exactly why Monte Sereno is near the top of the list for best cities to have an investment property in. It’s just a short drive to San Jose and Silicon Valley, yet still far enough away where people can disconnect and unwind at the end of the day. People who commute to these areas appreciate coming back home to Monte Sereno because it’s like living in a completely different region with the gorgeous landscape and overall beauty.

Investors are scooping up homes in and around Monte Sereno any chance they get for these reasons. Rental properties are on the rise in this area because people are attracted to the idea of living outside of major cities, among other reasons. To some extent, investors can still demand a hefty rent to turn a profit because of the type of people who search for rental homes in the area. And possibly the best thing about it is the residents of Monte Sereno are typically accepting of new tenants, since they know the high price tag of the rental home leads to quality people to maintain the peace within the city.

Investment properties are on the rise across the country, but especially in this region of California. The cities surrounding Monte Sereno continue to experience growth in many different areas, so there may not be a better time to make the investment. While Monte Sereno’s rich history suggests it won’t be commercializing any time soon, that’s what makes it a unique place for people to live and for investors to find a great investment property.
