About Los Altos
Brief History of Los Altos, California (The Heights)
The area today known as Los Altos was originally monikered ‘Banks and Braes’. In 1906 top executives of the Southern Pacific Railroad purchased 140 acres of land from Sarah Winchester (of Winchester Rifle fame) and formed the Altos Land Company. The plan was to connect Palo Alto and Los Gatos by train and making Los Altos a commuter town. They provided a train operations until 1964 (consumer and freight) to and from San Francisco – along what today is known as Foothill Expressway.
By 1949, residents were unhappy with Santa Clara county government zoning regulations so they decided to incorporate. Los Altos became Santa Clara county’s eleventh city on December 1, 1952.
The town had a brush was greatness when in 1976, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak built the first Apple Computer in Jobs’s family garage in Los Altos.
Living in Los Altos
In Spanish Los Altos means “The Heights” a long time ago was peaceful, rustic and rural community complete with orchards, vineyards and ranches. Today, this city, with just over 30,000 residents in approximately 11,000 households, is a delightful, charming, residential area of approximately 7 square miles.
The medium household income in Los Altos is slightly over $158,000 per household. It is located in the middle of the San Francisco Peninsula and combines a suburb rich environment with a diverse culture and history that is a desired location of Silicon Valley dwellers. The sheik downtown provides ample shopping, walking restaurants, and a decent portfolio of office parks along two of the main thoroughfares (Foothill Expressway and El Camino Real).
There are several main areas of shopping poised throughout the city, however Los Altos still offers the small-town atmosphere. The neighborhoods are divided into four primary areas: North Los Altos, South of El Monte, Country Club, and The Highlands/Woodland Acres. Multiple opportunities for biking, running and walking trails exist which connect to neighboring cities and open space. Los Altos also boasts tremendously popular public schools which are highly desirable and sought-after.

A large percentage of residents of surrounding neighborhoods are Silicon Valley workers, entrepreneurs, long-term residents, and investors. From most of Los Altos residents can walk, bike or jog to Downtown Los Altos where they can enjoy shops, restaurants, parks, and a typical downtown experience.
Investing in Los Altos
Although owner-occupied properties make up a large percentage of the housing stock, Los Altos is an ideal location for real estate investors looking for long-term buy and hold properties. As long as Silicon Valley economy remains robust, and Stanford University remains a world class university the city, buildings, and development surrounding Los Altos will continue to thrive, prosper, and succeed.
