About Mountain View
Mountain View, California is today best known as the city where Google headquarters is located. Originally named because of its amazing views of the Santa Cruz mountains Mountain View is today one of the primary cities at the center of Silicon Valley. Its origins as a pedestrian friendly suburb included a stagecoach stop between San Jose and San Francisco has grown to more than 75,000 residents on the “Peninsula.” Mountain View is neighbors with Palo Alto to the north, and Los Altos and Sunnyvale to the south.
In addition to Google, Mountain View is today home to Mozilla, Symantec, Intuit and was also home to the Byte Shop which sold the first 50 Apple I computers – made famous by recent movies about Steve Jobs.
Originally, the plot of land where Mountain View resides was a Mexican land grant in 1842 by famous California Governor Juan Alvardo to Francisco Estrada. The grant was devised to Mariano Castro who divided and sold half of the land to Martin Murphy, Jr. and became what is today known as Sunnyvale, Mountain View’s next door neighbor.
Mountain View was incorporated in November of 1902 when the town was a robust agricultural community until World War II. After the war the growth of people and a burgeoning aerospace and electronics technology industries began to develop – the early stages of Silicon Valley.
Obviously, today Mountain View is technology hub – city leadership creatively attracted high tech companies in the early 1990s which led to a significant economic re-vitalization of the city and its neighborhoods, and business districts including Downtown and Castro Streets.
